Why Study Latin?
Latin is Beneficial for Education
Latin was the language of one of the most influential cultures of the ancient world: the Romans. Even after the demise of their empire, their language lingered in the church, the universities, and the law courts of the infant nations of the middle ages. Today our culture is saturated with this immortal language.
At the LLS we begin the study of Latin in the second grade. The reason for this, in short, is that in addition to the wealth of benefits Latin gives to a student in terms of English vocabulary and disciplining the mind, we see Latin as the next step after phonics in the path to reading proficiency. It also sets a strong platform in math and sciences and the vocabulary that goes along with each subject.
If you are new to LLS and your student has never had Latin, please be assured that students of varying grade levels are assimilated into our Latin program every year.
For a more detailed explanation of the reasons why we make Latin the core of education at LLS, please refer to “The Top 10 Reasons for Studying Latin,” an article from The Classical Teacher, published by Memoria Press.
